Milk thistle extract is made from the seeds of Silybum marianum, a thistle native to the Mediterranean with a long history in European herbal tradition. Its marker compounds are the silymarin complex, a group of flavonolignans that includes silybin. The catalog lists 4:1 and 10:1 seed extracts, a 40:1 extract at no less than 50% silymarin by HPLC, and grades at 80% silymarin by UV, one also stated as 50% by HPLC and another as 30% silybin by HPLC. UV and HPLC results for the same material differ, so compare grades by the test method on the specification. Silymarin has poor water solubility, which suits capsules and tablets better than clear beverages.
