Bitter melon, Momordica charantia, is a tropical vine whose ridged green fruit is eaten as a vegetable across South and Southeast Asia, Africa and the Caribbean. The extract is made from the fruit. The catalog lists three standardized grades: 10% charantin, 20% saponins, and 10% momordicosides by UV. Each grade is defined by a different marker compound and test method, so they are not interchangeable on a specification. As the name suggests, the extract is very bitter and is normally encapsulated or tableted.
